Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

On February 24, 2024, the International Organization for Media, Creativity and Development held an open dialogue via WhatsApp, in which many academics and specialists in many fields participated and exchanged their views and experiences about Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The participants focused on the readiness´ level of the Arab educational system to keep pace with all developments and technologies in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
The dialogue also discussed the pros and cons of the educational system relying on AI, many experts considered that this technology is capable of correcting and strengthening the educational systems and strategies by changing traditional patterns and improving the role of the teacher in form and content, which positively effects the results of the educational process.

According to the participants, Artificial Intelligence makes it possible to teach and train each person individually, by analysing data related to the persons and knowing their needs, capabilities, and inclinations, and thus providing programs that are appropriate to the skill level and speed of understanding of the student and trainee. This ensures effectiveness, quality of education, and transforming knowledge into behaviour and production.

The participants talked about some of the disadvantages of including AI in the educational process, the most prominent of which was the Dehumanization of Education, that is, transforming educational work into machine and programs devoid of emotions and dynamic human logic. Furthermore, the abandon of scientific and educational bodies of the traditional role of the teacher is a real threat posed by the use of AI.

The high cost of relying on this technology is linked to the economic situation of countries and educational institutions. Therefore, this is a problem for some countries and is not an obstacle for other countries.

This discussion held in Arabic was moderated by Dr. Madeleine Kassab, president of the International Organization for Media, Creativity and Development.
