On May 25, 2024, the International Organization for Media, Creativity and Development held an open dialogue via WhatsApp, in which many academics and specialists in many fields participated and exchanged their views and experiences on the Use of Hypnosis in Psychotherapy.
Participants focused on the pros and cons of relying on hypnosis to treat some diseases and psychological disorders.
Some believe that the negatives of hypnosis are greater than its positives, especially since it puts the person in a state of partial loss of consciousness and pushes them towards stories buried or deep in the subconscious mind, which makes the patients remember details that may greatly affect their present and future unless these details are treated properly in an accurate and safe methods.
Some of the participating researchers believe that the “Free Association” approach is a successful alternative that eliminates the necessity of using hypnosis in treatment.
As for those who believe in the positives of hypnosis, they believe that relaxing and breaking restrictions when entering the depths of the subconscious mind contribute greatly to freedom from anxiety, depression and many other diseases and psychological disorders.
Some specialists highlighted the influence of the patients´religious ideas about hypnosis on their acceptance of this method. Some people categorically reject it, considering it a ritual that conflicts with religious rituals and obligations. Others hesitate to accept it because they do not know the precise religious opinion about this therapeutic practice. There are also those who have no problem undergoing hypnosis for the purpose of treatment, considering that this method was not used in the time of the Messengers and that God does not forbid what can treat people with physical and psychological illness.
This session was moderated by Dr. Madeleine Kassab, President of the International Organization for Media, Creativity and Development.
